Irmgard Ella Hird
Irmgard Ella Hird, 99, of Andover, died Sunday, March 11, at the Penacook Place in Haverhill. Born Irmgard Ella Fischer, she was the daughter of German immigrants who came to South Lawrence in the late 1800s. In 1935, she married George Hird of Methuen. The couple lived in West Andover where Mr. Hird was a restaurant manager at Shattucks Farm. In the 1950s, they established a popular restaurant on Lowell Street in Andover called the Brown Jug. Later, Mrs. Hird became director of the Volunteer Department at Lawrence General Hospital. She retired from a position at the State Hospital in Wrentham in 1976 and returned to Andover where she resided at Frye Village for many years. She had been a member of the West Parish Church since 1956 and a member of the Lawrence Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star. In 2003, Mrs. Hird became a resident of the Penacook Place Nursing Home in Haverhill. She would have turned 100 on Dec. 26, 2007. Family members include her daughter, Nancy Ellen Lawniczak and a son-in-law George Lawniczak of Orlando, Fla.; six grandchildren; as well as four great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her younger daughter, Beverly Ann. Interment will take place at a later date at West Parish Cemetery, Andover. At the request of the family, there will be no services. Memorial donations may be made to Beacon Hospice Lighthouse Foundation, 529 Main St., Suite 101, Boston, MA 02129. Arrangements are by the Charles Dewhirst Funeral Home, 80 Broadway, Methuen.
