A can't-miss game?

By Rick Harrison

Don't be surprised if injured Andover High two-time All-Conference defenseman Dan Godefroi laces up the skates and plays in what would be his last high school hockey game this Sunday in the state final against Hanover at the TD Banknorth Garden.

It all makes sense. What fierce competitor would want to miss this game?

"We're taking it day-by-day," said head coach Mario Martiniello. "Dan skated without pads at our practice on Tuesday - and Wednesday he'll try it with the gear.

"He's seeing a physical therapist every day. His calf is still weak, which is understandable, and it's basically a matter of how the leg and ankle respond between now and Sunday.

"Even if he doesn't end up playing," added Martiniello, "Danny will definitely dress for the game and be on our bench."

Godefroi, who has sat out a number of games down the stretch and in the tournament with an ankle injury, was scheduled to continue testing the tender ankle at practices today, tomorrow and a light skate on Saturday.

"It goes without saying Danny wants to play," said Martiniello. "He's been cleared by his doctor. They don't think one game will do any more damage."

His parents also reportedly don't want to deprive their son of a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

It's a tough call, but what high school kid is going to pass up a chance to play at the Garden?

"The last thing anyone wants is to have Danny re-injure the ankle and jeopardize his baseball season," noted Martiniello. "If we err it will be on the side of caution."

Stay tuned.
