Milton O. Gray


Milton O. Gray, 84, died Sunday, March 4 at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center after a period of failing health.

He was the husband of Zilpha M. (Moorhouse) Gray.

Born in Andover, a son of the late Claremont and Hazel (Stiles) Gray, he was raised in Andover and attended Andover schools, graduating in 1941.

He attended Burdett College and worked as a bookkeeper for the Irving B. Moore Corp. of Cambridge for over 30 years.

Mr. Gray served as a surgical technician in the US Army during World War II from 1943 to 1946.

He lived in Whitman for 52 years and became an active member of the community. He was one of the founders and past treasurer of the Whitman Project, known today as Whitman Counseling Center.

He also participated in building the new town library, and served as treasurer for the Friends of the Whitman Public Library and for the Old Abington Historical Society.

He served on the board of directors for Heifer International.

Family members include his wife, Zilpha M. Gray; son David Gray of Whitman; daughters Marjorie DiSalvio of Randolph, Hazel Mitchell and Marcia Sawdy, both of Whitman, and Dorothy Regan of West Bridgewater; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by one grandson.

Services are private. A family memorial service will take place Saturday, March 10 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the family home, 270 Beulah St., Whitman.

Arrangements are by Blanchard Funeral Chapel in Whitman.
