AHS girls: Chance at Cole Scholarship
Andover High School senior girls are eligible to apply now for the Virginia H. Cole Scholarship Award, created by the League of Women Voters of Andover/North Andover in memory of "one woman who made a difference" in Andover. Jinny Cole, as selectman, School and Finance Committee member, and president and active member of the League of Women Voters, was exemplary in service to her community. The purpose of the $500 scholarship award is to recognize a young woman graduating from Andover High School who has demonstrated the ideals of the League. The League's guiding mission is the promotion of political responsibility through informed and active participation of citizens in government. Any female student who can demonstrate these principles through volunteer work in government, education, environmental protection or other such endeavors in the Greater Lawrence area will be considered for the scholarship award. Applications are available at the Andover High School Guidance Office and online at www.lwv-andovers.org (click on "Current Projects"). They must be returned by Friday, April 20. The applicant must describe an experience that shows she has made a difference in the community, and she will have to provide two letters of recommendation from two different people - one demonstrating volunteer experience within the school and one demonstrating community service outside the school. The Virginia H. Cole Scholarship Award will be administered by the Andover Dollars for Scholars program. In contrast to other scholarship programs where a student's aid package from a college may be reduced by a percentage of the scholarship received, Dollars for Scholars' Collegiate Partner institutions have agreed not to adjust the students' financial aid packages to reflect Dollars for Scholars grants. Over 500 colleges, universities and other accredited institutions in the United States are Collegiate Partner schools. Some institutions may match a portion of a Dollars for Scholars chapter award up to the amount set by the institution. For more information, contact Joan Duff at 978-685-3212.
