Norman Mackay

Norman "Ian" Mackay, 88, of Andover and a longtime resident of Duxbury, died Wednesday evening, Feb. 7, at Academy Manor Nursing Home.

Mr. Mackay was the son of the late Ethel May (Parr) Mackay and Hugh Miller Mackay.

He was born in Batu Blackan, Northern Malaysia, where his father managed a rubber plantation.

Mr. Mackay graduated from Edinburgh University School of Architecture.

During World War II he served in the British Armed Forces, attaining the rank of field major.

He was stationed in England during the Battle of Britain and was then sent to Africa to train troops in Ethiopia and Somalia.

Mr. Mackay moved with his young family to Montreal, Canada, in July 1949 for his first architectural job after earning his degree. He came to the United States in 1950 and was employed by a number of architectural firms in New England, including Architects Collaborative in Boston.

Later, he worked for many years as project manager for Howard Johnson's in Braintree. During the course of his architectural career, he helped to design Catholic churches, various hospitals and the chapel at Logan Airport.

For over 30 years Mr. Mackay lived in Duxbury, and prior to that, resided in Scituate, and Yarmouth, Maine.

Mr. Mackay, always an athlete in school, was an avid golfer and tennis player later in life.

Family members include his two sons, Angus of Sandown, N.H., and Hugh and his wife, Heather Joan, of Ft. Collins, Colo.; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his wife, Ann D. (Murphy) Mackay, who died in 1979.

His two sons said they will always remember the wonderful summer family trips to Great East Lake in Maine and his grandchildren will always remember him for all his wonderful stories.

A memorial service is planned for a later date.

Arrangements are by the H.L. Farmer & Sons Funeral Homes, Haverhill and Bradford.
