Roger Edwin Wiehe

Roger Edwin Wiehe died Feb. 8, at the age of 79.

He was born in Mount Vernon, N.Y., and was educated at Yale and Columbia universities.

Mr. Wiehe moved to Boston to teach at Boston University and moved to Andover in 1965, to take up a tenured academic position at the University of Lowell.

He served as a humanities professor teaching literature, art and comparative religion until his retirement in 1995.

He continued to teach and take courses at Lowell and Harvard's Learning in Retirement program until his health began to fail last year.

Throughout his time in Andover he was deeply committed to a variety of community programs, including the American Field Service program, Habitat for Humanity, A Better Chance, and the mission work of South Church, where he and his wife, Anne, had been members since coming to Andover.

Mr. Wiehe and his wife also traveled extensively abroad.

He asked to be remembered for his teaching efforts to inform others about cultural diversity, aesthetic creativity, and human values, and for his efforts to help his neighbors and community.

Members of his family include his wife, Anne; daughter and son, Celia and Austin, and their spouses Tim and Barbara; and two grandchildren.

There will be a memorial gathering for Mr. Wiehe, to be scheduled for a date in May.

Memorial contributions may be made to Andover Committee for A Better Chance, PO Box 212, Andover, 01810.
