Adelaide Shorten
Adelaide "Addie" (Webb) Shorten, 85, a lifelong resident of Andover, died Thursday evening, Jan. 25 at Academy Manor Nursing Home in Andover, after a lengthy illness. Mrs. Shorten was born in Andover to the late William and Anna (Wilcox) Webb. She graduated from Punchard High School, Macintosh Business School, and completed a two-year, postgraduate course in baking at Essex Agricultural School. Mrs. Shorten worked as a pastry chef at Fieldstone's Restaurant and later during World War II as a pastry chef at Whitinsville Machine Shop. She spent many years working at Dalton's Drug Store and later Hughes Pharmacy, and also was a bookkeeper at her husband's Park Street Garage. She finished her career at CVS Pharmacy and TJ Maxx. Mrs. Shorten was a longtime member of Ballardvale United Church, and was avid horsewoman who had several horses and ponies, She and her husband enjoyed their racing Shetland ponies. She loved animals, playing the organ and knitting. Family members include her brother, Phillip G. Webb of Andover; 12 nieces and nephews; and many great and great-great nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Robert Shorten; and siblings, William, Bradford and Alfred Webb, and Ruth Newcomb. Funeral arrangements were by Dewhirst & Conte Funeral Home, Andover.
