Renaissance choir to give winter concert at Christ Church
This Sunday, Jan. 28 at 3 p.m., the Boston-based Renaissance choir Convivium Musicum will perform Les Pseaumes de David (The Psalms of David) at Christ Church, Central Street. Under the direction of conductor Scott Metcalfe, the 20-voice, mixed ensemble will sing tunes and poetry from the Genevan Psalter set by Sweelinck, Goudimel and LeJeune. Metcalfe, a specialist in music between 1400 and 1750 whose 20-year career as a baroque violinsist and conductor has taken him across North America and Europe, directs the vocal ensemble Blue Heron and is concertmaster of the Trinity Consort in Portland, Ore. In venues from Seattle to New Hampshire, Metcalfe has conducted Bach's St. John Passion, Monteverdi's Vespers of 1610, Handel's Messiah and his opera Amadigi. A founding member of La Luna and of The King's Noyse, Metcalfe appears on recordings on harmonia mundi, ATMA, Dorian, Wildboar, and elsewhere. He holds a bachelor's degree from Brown University, where he majored in biology, and a master's degree in historical performance practice from Harvard. Two singers from the Christ Church Parish Choir - Cindy Linkas and Anney Gillotte - will be singing in this concert. "Come support their efforts and enjoy a delightful afternoon of unaccompanied choral music," organizers said. Tickets are $15, or $8 for students and seniors, and may be purchased at the door.
