Roland H. Dewhurst
Roland H. Dewhurst, 82, of Andover, died Thursday, Jan. 11 at his home. Mr. Dewhurst was born in Revere and was raised in Saugus and North Reading. He was a graduate of Reading High School and The Wilson School in Boston, receiving certification in phlebotomy and radiography. He practiced at a hospital in Woods Hole. While serving in the US Navy during World War II, he participated in the V-12 Program at MIT. He worked as an industrial tradesman until he joined the General Electric Co., where he worked as a manufacturing engineer certified by SME, North Shore Chapter 146, until his retirement in 1987. Mr. Dewhurst was a member of the Andover Bible Chapel and did prison ministry at the Billerica House of Corrections for 10 years. He was a member of the Andover Choral Society and the Andover Men's Chorus under the direction of J. Everett Collins. Family members include his wife, Janet M. (Wilson) of Andover; daughter J. Gail and her husband Keith Umphlett of Derry, N.H.; four sons, Roland W. and his wife Georgia of Gig Harbor, Wash.; Edward A. and his wife, Donna, of Niskayuna, N.Y.; Kevin C. and his wife Sheri of Bedford, N.H.; and Timothy B. and his wife, Kimberly (Wacome) of Springfield, Ohio; two brothers, Donald of Pittsboro, N.C., and Wesley of LaVerne, Calif.; 12 grandchildren; one great-grandson; and several nieces and nephews. Calling hours are Friday, Jan. 19 from 4 to 8 p.m. at Charles Dewhirst Andover Funeral Home. Funeral services are Saturday, Jan. 20, at 10 a.m. at Andover Bible Chapel.
