Malcolm H. Yaghmoorian
Malcolm H. Yaghmoorian, 83, of Andover died Sunday, Jan. 14, at his home following a long battle with cancer. Born in Lawrence to the late Harry and Katherine (Attarian), Mr. Yaghmoorian and his family moved to Andover in 1927 when he was only 4 years old. He attended Andover schools and graduated from Punchard High School in 1941. As a youth he studied and played the violin. After high school he worked a short time at JP Stevens (Marland) textile mills in Andover as a weaver. Mr. Yaghmoorian later joined the US Army and was first stationed in Texas, and then served as a private first class during World War II as a radio operator, and then as a corporal in Europe between 1944 and 1946. He served in what was known at the time as the Ardennes Offensive taking place in Belgium and Luxemburg. Later this action was known to Americans as the Battle of the Bulge. Mr. Yaghmoorian was known to be picked often to drive jeeps because of his extreme caution and rugged-condition driving skills. After the war Mr. Yaghmoorian returned home to his job at the Marland Mills facility in Andover. In the late 1950s, he went to barbering school in New Hampshire and became a barber in Andover Center at Steven's Barber Shop on Main Street, later known as Joe's Barber Shop, and now as the Andover Barber Shop. He retired from Joe's Barber Shop in 1986. Mr. Yaghmoorian was a member of the St. Matthew's Masonic Lodge, the Shriners, and of South Church in Andover for 75 years. He enjoyed reading newspapers and magazines. He also enjoyed new cars. He liked almost all TV westerns, war movies and shows, and Kojak was said to be one of his favorite programs. Family members include his wife of 53 years, Rose (Damboorajian) Yaghmoorian; sons Robert M. and his wife Mary of Andover; grandchildren, Ryan, Daniel, and Timothy; son David H. of Lawrence, and son Martin C. of Andover; brother-in-law, Avidis (Viti) of Fitchburg; late sister Ann Yaghmoorian of Andover; and numerous cousins, several of whom predeceased him.
