Florence L. MacKenzie
Florence L. (Corey) MacKenzie, 97, of Andover died Jan. 1. She was born, raised and educated in Malden and was a resident of Andover for more than 50 years. Mrs. MacKenzie was an avid gardener. In her neighborhood she was known as the "Rose Lady." She also enjoyed watching sports and was a devoted Red Sox fan who was able to attend a game in celebration of her 97th birthday last May. Friends and family remember Mrs. MacKenzie's beautiful blue eyes and lovely hair. Family members said she never missed her Thursday appointments with Jack Caruso, her hairdresser. Mrs. MacKenzie was an active member of the Andover Garden Club for many years and was a volunteer for the American Red Cross. She belonged to the November Club of Andover, the Andover Historical Society, and South Church. Mrs. MacKenzie was appreciated by many as a surrogate mother or grandmother. The family acknowledged Claudia Trede and Michele Kanach and her other caregivers for their many years of loving care, and her Robandy Road neighbors for their support and many acts of kindness. Mrs. MacKenzie was predeceased by her husband, Charles MacKenzie, and a sister, Geraldine Manning. Family members include her children, Diane M. Griffiths of Wellesley Hills, and Richard and his wife Emily MacKenzie of South Bristol, Maine; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. A memorial reception will take place at Mrs. MacKenzie's home on Sunday, Jan. 14 from 4 to 6 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to Patrick O'Gara, MD, Discretionary Fund, Brigham and Women's Hospital, 116 Huntington Ave., 5th Floor, Boston, MA 02116.
