Veterans Day events set

U.S. Senator Ted Kennedy will launch Andover's Veterans Day week activites as the keynote speaker for the annual Veterans Day Breakfast on Monday, Nov. 8, at the Wyndham Andover (formerly Marriott Hotel) at 7:30 a.m.

The American Red Cross of Merrimack Valley and the Merrimack Valley Chamber of Commerce are cosponsors of the breakfast.

The event will feature a special tribute to World War II veterans, since this year marks the 60th anniversary of the start of that war.

On Thursday, Nov. 11, Hilary Maguire, outreach program coordinator at the Veterans Northeast Outreach Center in Haverhill, will be the keynote speaker at Andover's Veterans Day ceremonies.

The Mount Kisco, N.Y., native, grew up on the South Shore and graduated from Norwood High School. She served in the U.S. Army from 1991 to 1993, and was honorably discharged as a non-commissioned officer.

Maguire attended the Army's Airborne School at Fort Benning, Ga., and holds the distinction of being only the second woman to become the enlisted honor graduate of her paratrooper class. She then served with the 782nd Maintenance Battalion, part of the 82nd Airborne Division.

Maguire's great-grandfather fought in World War I in France; her grandfather saw action with the Army during the battle of the Bulge in World War II; her father was on active duty during the Korean War; one brother is on duty with the Army in Hawaii; and another brother has just enlisted in the Army.

The Townsman will run the schedule of Veterans Day ceremonies in next week's edition, Nov. 10.
